How to Determine Your Pipe Size

Not sure which model you need? Here are three easy ways to find out your main water line size.

Method 1: Measure the Outer Diameter

Wrap a string or flexible tape around the pipe where it enters your home (usually near the water meter or where the main line comes through the foundation). Measure the circumference, then divide by 3.14 (pi) to get the outer diameter.

  • ~3.3 cm (1.3") outer diameter = 3/4" pipe (Model 900-001)
  • ~4.2 cm (1.66") outer diameter = 1" pipe (Model 900-006)
  • ~5.3 cm (2.1") outer diameter = 1.25" pipe (Model 900-002)

Method 2: Check Your Water Meter

Your water meter or the pipe directly after it often has the size printed or stamped on it. Look for markings like "3/4", "1", or "1-1/4" near where the meter connects to your home's plumbing.

Method 3: Use a Coin for Reference

Hold a US quarter (approximately 1 inch diameter) next to the inside opening of your pipe:

  • If the pipe opening is smaller than the quarter → 3/4" pipe
  • If the pipe opening is about the same size as the quarter → 1" pipe
  • If the pipe opening is larger than the quarter → 1.25" pipe

Pro Tips

  • Most single-family homes built after 1970 use 1-inch main lines.
  • Condos and townhomes typically have 3/4-inch lines.
  • Homes over 3,500 sq ft or with irrigation systems often have 1.25-inch lines.
  • When in doubt, measure twice or send us a photo — we verify for free before installation.
